When the Shoe Fits, I Buy It!

Time to show you more of my favorite things! People are always so amazed to hear about the shoes I find at Goodwill–they can’t believe I can find such great new or nearly new shoes on such a regular basis. Luckily, I have this blog to prove it to you :)

Let’s face it, “spring” here is over. I was on the hunt for some casual shoes to wear to all the cool things going on in St. Pete (because there are lots of cool things going on in St. Pete!) I basically only had flip flops and heels with the occasional sneaker thrown in the mix. Not conducive to markets and festivals and bikes rides and so on. Look what I found!

Equally important, just look at what they would have run me brand new!

Ohhhhh guys. These next shoes give me all the heart eyes. I might have actually jumped up and down when I checked and they were my size. Please let me introduce my brand new Sam & Libby heeled ankle boots, and we are soulmates. Similar styles run $44.99 from Target! They were $9.96 at Goodwill!

Guess what? I snagged these brand new Guess pumps for a 10th of the retail price. Black heels probably get the most wear out of anything in my closet, so any time I find a new or nearly new pair in my size that suit my fancy, in the cart they go!

The next pair didn’t come home with me, but are certainly worth a mention! Even if you don’t find something to call your own, you’ll at least see something interesting on every trip to Goodwill. That, my friends, I promise you.

Goodwill Announces 2017 Volunteer Awards

Apollo Beach resident and Brandon group honored for their time

Goodwill Industries-Suncoast will announce Laura Gage as Goodwill Volunteer of the Year, and the Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon as Volunteer Group of the Year on Friday, April 21. The awards will be presented during Goodwill’s BookWorks recognition luncheon at 11:30 a.m., at the Columbia Restaurant, 2117 E. 7th Ave. (Ybor City), Tampa. 10 News Anchor Courtney Robinson will serve as master of ceremonies for the luncheon.

Goodwill-Suncoast Volunteer of the Year 2017

Laura Gage, Apollo Beach

Laura moved to the Tampa Bay area two and half years ago from the Chicago area, and she jumped right in to volunteering – not only for BookWorks but also for her church, other areas of Goodwill, and with the Hillsborough Education Foundation. In fact, when Laura first learned about Goodwill’s BookWorks program in 2015, she was so impressed she went home and filled out her application to volunteer the very same day. As a BookWorks reader, Laura traveled to west Tampa to spend 122 hours reading to 456 children and distributing 2,773 books in 2016. She is very passionate about early literacy and a fantastic ambassador for the BookWorks program. The teachers and directors at the centers she serves cannot praise her enough for her kindness and dedication.

Goodwill-Suncoast Volunteer Group of the Year 2017

Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon

For more than a decade, the Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon has devoted itself to volunteering for BookWorks. There are nine dedicated readers: Gena Schaffer, Janet Daigle, Janelle Hill, Eddie Jenkins, Lynn Langowski, Fran Palek, Curtis Rogers, Nicholas Schar and Dipa Shah. In 2016 they spent 231 hours reading to 878 children and distributing 3,625 books at 14 different locations. The group has made it one of their missions to serve kids who are in the greatest need of support – more than half of the children they serve have special needs. The group is a wonderful community asset for BookWorks, helping to spread the word, recruit volunteers and keeping us informed of local events. They also volunteer to drop off books donated to elementary schools through the BookWorks program.

Fancy (Frugal) Finds!

We love the opportunity to dress up and be fancy every once in awhile. Luckily we get the opportunity fairly often and Goodwill has come through with a killer outfit every single time! Last year I needed a formal dress for a cruise. I picked up this little black number, perfect for the occasion, for just $7 and paired it with some silver Guess heels (also from Goodwill many, many moons ago) and a silver and black throw. Perfect! The dapper dude on my arm certainly didn’t hurt the look either.

What about an office holiday party? I always dread this one because you can’t wear the same thing you wore last year when there’s photographic evidence. I spotted this $7 pewtery brocade dress while I was hunting for office wear one day, drooled over it a little bit, but decided I had nowhere to wear it. Fast forward a few weeks and I suddenly remember I need a dress for the holiday party! I dashed back to Goodwill and was ever so lucky to find it right where I had left it. Hubby bought that Tommy Hilfiger corduroy blazer at Goodwill a few years ago for less than $10 and it has been one of his favorite staple pieces. Now is a good time to remind you to try everything on, check the seams and hems, and look for stains and holes while you’re shopping. You cannot return items to Goodwill even if you find a hole, tear, or stain later. I totally missed the ripped seams on this one–and while hubby is handy with a needle and thread, I’m not. So guess what he did for me? I’m one lucky lady.

A few years ago I “splurged” and found this metallic gold dress for $15 as a boutique item. She got me through numerous holiday and New Year’s parties and even a piece on the news for Goodwill until the wrong dry cleaner got rid of her sparkle forever :( Check the labels when you’re shopping! I’ve shaken my fist angrily enough times later on when I see the dreaded words “Dry Clean Only” on something I was about to throw into the wash. Hubby’s navy sports coat and dress shirt are from Goodwill too!

What about a snazzy charity event? This dress is one of my all time favorites and I wish I had the opportunity to wear it more often. The sparkly gold shoes are a boutique brand with a leather sole and were an absolute steal for less than $10. This entire outfit, sans jewelry, cost less than $20. Where else can you go to find a deal like that? You’ll notice hubby’s navy blazer making an appearance here as well. A good closet has a good base! Start with some good staple pieces and build from there. I can’t wait to share more of my fancy finds with you!

Project SEARCH Open House April 6

A unique program & partnership provides work experience to youth with disabilities

What happens when Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students graduate from high school? The difficulty in transitioning to “real life” is a pressing issue for the students and their families. Now, in an unprecedented partnership, Goodwill-Suncoast, Marion County Schools, Vocational Rehabilitation and Hilton Ocala are joining forces to launch a new Project SEARCH program in Marion County.

The Project SEARCH High School Transition Program is a business-led, one-year, school-to-work program which takes place entirely at the workplace. It’s designed for people with significant disabilities whose goal is competitive employment.

An Open House will be held Thursday, April 6, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Hilton Ocala, 3600 SW 36th Ave. All Marion County Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students and families are invited to attend to learn more about the program and how to apply. The program will begin in the next school year.

Goodwill-Suncoast was selected in December to operate in Florida for Project SEARCH, providing employment services to students with disabilities in Marion County. Goodwill will work with the Hilton Ocala to provide on-site job coaching, training and outplacement services to students. Internships will last the entire school year and after completion students will receive placement services from Goodwill’s Employment Services Program in Ocala.
