Hippie Dash for Peace, Love & Goodwill is May 19

Goodwill’s 3rd annual Hippie Dash returns to Gulfport

In 1969, Woodstock was an iconic cultural event billed as 3 Days of Peace & Music.  Goodwill-Suncoast and USI will bring back some of that groovy feeling in the form of the Hippie Dash for Peace, Love & Goodwill. The event includes an 8K and a 5K run, a Flower Child Fun Run for little hippies, and a laid-back one-mile Walk, Woof & Roll for walkers, dogs and strollers. The 3rd annual Hippie Dash is expected to bring more than 1,000 hippies to downtown Gulfport!

This year’s Hippie Dash is going down Saturday, May 19, beginning at 8 a.m. The groove begins in the heart of Gulfport’s super funky downtown waterfront district at 5500 Shore Boulevard South. A DJ will spin tunes from the counterculture era, and all runners are encouraged to wear their most far-out threads for a chance to win Best Dressed Dude, Best Dressed Dudette and Best Dressed Flower Child awards. Participants in the Walk, Woof & Roll can dress their dogs up for a chance at a pooch prize too! After the race, participants can hang out in the Gulfport Casino, enjoy free munchies and beer, view the vintage VW bugs on display and wander through Gulfport’s outta sight downtown!

High-achieving hippies will be stoked to know the 8K and 5K runs are chip-timed events on certified courses. All participants will receive a fab T-shirt and a super-cool medal. Award medals will be given to the first-, second-, and third-place finishers in each age group of the 8K and 5K. If runners can only be there in spirit, there are virtual options for each race.

Come together right now! Register here: https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/Gulfport/HippieDash

Groovy businesses in the community are sponsoring this year’s event. USI is the presenting sponsor. Other sponsors include Publix Super Markets Charities, Hawkins Construction, Inc., Lokey Automotive Group, Piedmont Companies, Inc., Tampa Bay Times, Doubletake Studios and the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center Foundation.

All proceeds benefit Goodwill’s programs for adults with disabilities and for people with other barriers to self-sufficiency. Can you dig it?

First Day Outfit Jitters

Hi guys! I’ve had so many fun #ootd moments at my new job and a wonderful elevator mirror to snap some photos for you!

After some stressing about what to wear on Day #1, I settled on this recently acquired little black and white peplum dress I found for $6.98. I tried to hunt it down online with not much luck, but it looks like this line, Beige by eci, is available at Kohl’s. It’s a super comfy jersey-kinda knit–my favorite business attire secret ;) The tags weren’t on it, but the fabric appeared to still be brand new!

I paired it with a hand-me-down retro black beaded necklace from a friend’s mom and some familiar black and white heels from White House Black Market, part of this haul you might remember!

My new employer is a little more casual than my previous one, so you may see a shift in my day to day style–but I won’t be giving up on my pencil skirts and heels. I just see this as an opportunity to go shopping (!!!) and to spend Fridays in my favorite jeans…also from the GW!

Goodwill-Suncoast 2018 Volunteer Awards

Tarpon Springs resident and Clearwater group honored for their time

Goodwill Industries-Suncoast will announce Lynne Burghardt as Goodwill-Suncoast Volunteer of the Year, and the Clearwater Wednesday Sorter Ladies as Volunteer Group of the Year on Friday, April 13. The awards will be presented during Goodwill’s BookWorks recognition luncheon at 11:30 a.m., at the Columbia Restaurant, 2117 E. 7th Ave. (Ybor City), Tampa. 10 News Anchor Carolina Leid will serve as master of ceremonies for the luncheon.

Goodwill-Suncoast Volunteer of the Year 2018 – Lynne Burghardt, Tarpon Springs

Lynne began reading for the BookWorks children’s literacy program in 2003 after retiring from her family plant nursery. She is a very busy great-grandmother who also volunteers with the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pasco, teaches Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and participates in various events such as the Special Olympics and the Hunger Walk. In 2017 Lynne spent 157 hours reading to 42 children and distributing 11,770 books for BookWorks! Lynne says she gets more out of reading to children than they get from her, and she is loved and praised for the wonderful job she does by the teachers and directors at Lemon Street R Club and Sonlight Daycare. Lynne is a fantastic ambassador for the BookWorks program, inviting others to join and securing donations for the program.

Goodwill-Suncoast Volunteer Group of the Year 2018 – Clearwater Wednesday Sorter Ladies

Since August of 2017, the Clearwater Wednesday Sorter Ladies group has devoted its time volunteering in BookWorks’ Clearwater Book Room. The group began when Anne Faehnel saw information about BookWorks online and dropped by to check out the Book Room. She soon recruited four dedicated volunteers and is known as our “Master Recruiter.” The five sorters that make up the group are Anne, Karen Baumbach, Emily Destefano, Carmen Khavarian and Rose Schulz. All of the members are wonderful BookWorks ambassadors and they are the first group of sorters to win the award in 19 years. They also brought in books during our annual Book Drive, help with Elementary School Book Drops, and devote extra time and hours whenever needed.
