Goodwill Announces Volunteers of the Year

Hudson resident and Countryside group honored

Goodwill Industries-Suncoast announced Kitty Cappelli of Hudson as Goodwill Volunteer of the Year, and the Kiwanis Club of Countryside as Volunteer Group of the Year on Wednesday, May 5. The awards were presented during Goodwill’s volunteer recognition luncheon at 11:30 a.m., at the Columbia Restaurant, 2117 E. 7th Ave., Ybor City.

Goodwill Volunteer of the Year 2010

Kitty Cappelli, Hudson

In 2005 Kitty Cappelli became the first Pasco County volunteer for Goodwill’s early childhood literacy program, BookWorks. Since then she has read to hundreds of preschoolers at West Pasco County Head Start centers and presented thousands of books for the children to take home and share with their families. Thanks to the recruitment efforts of this outstanding volunteer, BookWorks readers now regularly visit Head Start centers throughout West Pasco County.

Kiwanis Club of Countryside Clearwater

The Kiwanis Club of Countryside Clearwater is being honored for its long-time support of Goodwill’s BookWorks program. Members of the club began reading for the program in 2004 and now read weekly to children at all Clearwater Head Start centers. Club members also collect books for the BookWorks program.

Dozens of other people whose volunteer efforts have supported Goodwill’s mission will also be honored at the luncheon. Last year approximately 100 local volunteers donated nearly 4,000 hours of their time to support Goodwill programs in West Central Florida.

Goodwill Industries-Suncoast was founded in St. Petersburg, Fla. in 1954. Its mission is to help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work. The organization's successful donated goods retail operation helps support its human services in 10 counties, including employment services for people with all types of employment barriers, training centers for people with disabilities, affordable apartment communities, and community corrections programs. Goodwill is consistently ranked among the nonprofits most deserving of support based on the high percentage of revenue funneled to its programs.  For more information, visit www.goodwill-suncoast.org.
